Subject: Amateur or Professional?

Since it's coming round to the next World Championships I think it would be a
good idea to discuss / clarify what is required to be in the different
categories.

In the past there has been Professional and Amateur. In the days of hardware
chess computers it was quite clear who fell in each category but todays it's far
from clear. As an example SOS is the 2000 amateur champion yet was commercially
available at the time as part of the Young Talents CD.

So what is required to be in each section? How about adding another section -
freeware chess program. This would allow for three titles and would also give
the freeware / winboarders something to aim for. The categories would then look
like this:

1) Freeware - current EXE available for download.
2) Amateur - Engine cannot be available as a standalone package i.e. Young
Talents is OK
3) Professional - the rest.

Any comments?

Also I would like to propose that a new category / competition is created - the
Portable Chess Computer World Championships. This would be restricted to
PocketPCs, Palms etc.

What do people think?

Regards,

Steve Maughan
