Some players still like to simplify the positions by swapping pieces. If you play over some of Anand's games vs computers he does not seem to have a problem with swapping pieces to enter an endgame. Older programs (slow hardware) were very vulnerable in the endgame. At times opposite side castling and the standard pawn storm approach works. This though of course is becoming not as easy as it was in the past. Many programs seem to "understand" now how to attack also in opposite side castling games. Closed positions (you mentioned the Stonewall) is a trusted approach. One last thing on endgames. I would much rather enter a bishop piece endgame than one with Knights. Bob Hyatt and others have pointed out how the quirky knight move lends itself to computers.
