Subject: The new monster is here

Just thought that I would take a moment to let everyone know that the
Pentuim II 400Mhz is now on sale to the public here in the US. And it
won't be long (3rd quarter) before the planned release of the new 650Mhz
platform.
Can anyone even begin to predict how this new speed will affect
todays, or tommorrows playing programs ? When I went from P166 to PII
200, the only problem I encountered (and still have not resolved)
occurred with Rebel 8, which at first printed the tool bar in Martian
(Gree k to me). This was fixed after a call to the support section at
ICD, but the program to this date claims to be running on a 255 Mhz
processor, and I can't seem to fix that error. I don't think that it has
hurt the programs performance, but I have often wondered. ( Any
suggestions, Ed ?)
I am wondering if the number of tactical engines will increase with
this new technology, or if this will actually further benefit knowledge
based software mixed with tactical ability , which seems to be the
pinnacle of human play. Perhaps the Chessmaster series of programs
"personality" options will play much more like their namesakes.
