I was aware of that. I would understand if it was shareware and you wanted to
get paid for it. But to make it free and then create extra work for you and me
plus I need to wait to get a key seems like a strange joke.

There are certain concepts like freeware, shareware, cardware, addware,
commercial programs. People expect to be able to use a program right away when
it is called free, they expect to be able to use it right away but they know
they should send the author a message when it is cardware, they know there will
be annoying nag-screens and registration when it is shareware.

Just don't call it free and then force registration.
