Winboard fits your description perfectly if you ask me. You can download it
here http://www.tim-mann.org/engines.html .

It comes with a couple GNU Chess programs, and it will also allow you to use
many more powerfull and interesting Chess engines. If you need any help setting
Winboard up to use other engines, see this forum
http://f11.parsimony.net/forum16635/ The Winboard Forum.

It'll save games into pgn files, and of course you'll be able to open them and
play them back with VCR like buttons or with your keyboard, you'll also be able
to download and use tons of pgn databases of games by your favorite players or
events, etc...

You definately don't have to buy anything to do what you're asking the program
to do. Spend your money on books or a nice Chess set instead.

Pete
