Greater male variance is not particularly controversial (at least among
experts). See for example:

1. "Gender and Brains, II", Dan Seligman, Forbes, April 20,1998, p.
52-54.
2. "The ETS Gender Study: How Females and Males Perform in Educational
Settings", Nancy S. Cole, May 1997,
ftp://etsis1.ets.org/pub/res/gender.pdf.
3. "Sex Differences in Mental Test Scores, Variability, and Numbers of
High-Scoring Individuals", Larry Hedges and Amy Nowell, Science,
269(1995),
p. 41-45.

From [2]: "Below the 10th percentile and above the 90th percentile,
there
are about 4 females for every 5 males." (p. 18) and "male scores about
10%
more variable on average" (p. 28).

10th percentile is about IQ 120, so Fernando's original post overstated
the
amount of the difference.
