Hi Uri: Your answer open an interesting field for discussion: what is a better move? Let me explain my point about this. A better move -a good move- is, IMHO, one sensible to the needs of the position in strategical terms. I let aside the tactical issue as much just sheer calculation will give an answer about that; in this case clearly the program looking deeper will get "better" moves. In fact it will see things the slower hardware and program comb will not see. But looking further is not equal to looking best from an strategical point of view. No matter how far you go, if the evaluation does not take into account something important, it will not see it never. Only in the cases where strategical acumen can be tracked trought tactical terms, then deeper look makes a difference. But these cases are not too many. Maybe some day will be so IF the search is so deep that can almost see until the ver end a sequece of, say, 50 moves. I agree with you that as far as chess games tends to be solved on tactical ground, including mate as a tactical strike, this issue of qualitative improvement could seem out of question. Nevertheless, insofar you put to play equally good tactical programs, strateigical look makes the difference. And this last is something embedded in the program from the beginning. Cheers Fernando
