How many times does it have to be repeated?

It does not matter if the two opponents are not close in strength. As long as
they are not 400 elo points apart, the result of the match is meaningful for an
elo calculation.

Or you can view the problem in this way: Nimzo on K6-2 450 has a rating. Nimzo
on a A1200 has no rating yet. How can you get any rating by letting two unrated
programs (Nimzo on A1200 and Tiger 14 on K6-2 450) play against each other?

What makes sense is to play a rated program (Nimzo K6-2 450) against an unrated
program (Tiger 14 A1200) in order to be able to establish a rating for the
later.
