Scott Carmichael wrote: Just thought that I would take a moment to let everyone know that the Pentuim II 400Mhz is now on sale to the public here in the US. And it won't be long (3rd quarter) before the planned release of the new 650Mhz platform. fca then wrote: I believe the 650 is a typo. Should read 450 MHz. While 650 may well arrive, won't be this year, for sure :-) On April 22, 1998, Scott Carmichael then wrote: NOT a typo. In fact , a 700 Mhz chip is to be announced by the 4th quarter. ********** What is your source of information, Scott? If the net, please give a link. If other, please give a name or company. Thanks. I continue to believe that the 450MHz Slot 2 Xeon Pentium II will be the fastest we see from Intel this year. Also, Slot 2 (Xeon) will at least keep MHz-pace with any further Slot 1 Pentium IIs. My sources are: http://www.intel.com http://sysdoc.pair.com and a variety of press releases and other sources, found by using Infoseek (or some other quality search engine) and looking for "Pentium II" and then refining the search by (say) sub-hunting with "fast" or "faster" or "new" or "planned" etc. It is not in doubt that Merced and McKinley (planned successors to Xeon) will pass 650/700MHz in their spiral to >1GHz. But the latter (1 GHz) will be lucky to be out before 2001... And anything >600 MHz, not likely to ship before the second quarter of 1999. Katmai is graphics MMX oriented and I do not think will be too relevant for cc *compared to what else will be available*. Though I hope you are correct, Scott, as I want more power ... now! :-) Kind regards fca PS: Others - including Ed Schroder - and I, have posted more on this in the Anand vs Rebel thread.
