I remember having some difficulties similar to yours. But since it's a while
back, I can't quite recall what I did to fix them. Maybe something like this
would work:

1) Create book (not a lot of different ways to do that).
2) Load opening book, enable opening book (probably default) and disable engine
book.
3) Clear book learning and result learning, because learn files from a previous
book might interfere with the new one.
4) Select engine and play a game. Does it work?

Not a lot of secret spells involved here, so you've probably tried this already
without success. If your problem persists, I'll try to create one and mail the
details of success or failure :-).
