I'm sorry, yes...

I didn't think a protocol would be necessary.  You just route all output that
would have gone to the screen to the serial port (perhaps minus the board
display), and listen on the serial port for the same commands you would normally
expect from the user.  It would be up to the WinBoard plugin writer to translate
this dialogue to and from the WinBoard protocol.  This is basically what I did
with the existing SapphireII serial protocol (which I partially had to reverse
engineer; Novag's documentation was almost a decade out of date).
