As Walter noted elsewhere, on the Mac you can use ExaChess to play games between (MacChess 3.0e, Crafty 11.1, GNUChess 4.0b5 and ZZZZZZ). I would have thought that the ChessBase folks, with their "plug in engine" interface, would let you play the engines against each other. More generally, if there were a "standard" chess-engine to environment interface, then people could make programs that "jacked in" to that interface for such things as: - GUIs (like the one Crafty is compatible) - Chess match moderation (as you suggest - like ExaChess on the Mac) - Internet chess server clients - Chess boards (like TASC, etc. - Computer-Computer matches (and not just PC-PC, but PC-Unix, Unix-Mac, etc.) - modem interface (like Battlechess) Such a standardized interface could become, like PGN and EPD are now, a revolutionary tool for chess software, especially if this involves an ASCII serial protocol that can be used for the serial connection, modem connection, and the like.
