The first list was in the Swedish Chesscomputer magazine PLY 1984. Of course no
autoplaying. There were only table computers. That year came Novag Super
Constellation that was the strongest for a while. Although it is 17 years ago
these computers were rather strong, the latter about 1700 in ELO rating. Super
Constellation was the first computer that could do positional sacrifices and it
played a little as Gambit Tiger. It would be fun if that program could be
translated to modern hardware.

About your statistic. In PLY there was the conclusion that if you doubled the
fastness of hardware there was an improvement of about 70 ELO rating. If that
still is true most of the improvements are depending of faster hardware, I
think.
