They are ASCII files that can be shared with others, or if others give you their .lrn files, you can "import" them into your position.bin/book.bin files. all of the "learning" goes on in book.bin (for book learning) and position.bin (for search learning). You can delete the .lrn files if you want, without losing a thing.
