Intel only certifies the 2M L2 cache xeons for 8-way (that is all they are building at the moment it seems, due to the problem with memory bandwidth). Those are selling for a bunch of money. A year ago, a 512KB xeon/550 was selling for $1,000, the 1MB xeon/550 was selling for $2,300, and the 2MB xeon/550 was priced at over $4,000. 8 of those takes you to 32 thousand dollars before you get started. A "big 8-way box" is in the $70-$80K price range. However, note that there are bigger boxes for those that are not stuck in the Intel / Windows world. I hope to run a demo on a 64 cpu alpha later this summer, for example...
