You might have overlooked another possibility set in time. With todays advances
in computer hardware speed, engines that are more knowledge-driven than DF or CT
can surpase them in elo eventually. For now they often lose on tactics which is
beyond their horizon; in the future the chances of detecting these tactics
because of greater search depth are increased. The only question is: how fast
should this hardware be ?

P.S. It's not my intention to discus how 'knowledgeable' the different engines
are. My point is just to state that more knowledge will benifit more on better
hardware than "less-knowledge".
