That's their page on how to do it.

I don't support "edit", which may just mean that you can't set up a position.
That's a protover 1 command, and I support only protover 2.  This may change.

I don't support the Chessbase-specific "fritz", "reset", "castle", "ep", and
"ponder" commands.  These are ignored.

There is a bug in the release Gerbil that causes it to Assert and die if it gets
some sorts of time controls.  This will be fixed in the next release, due out
within a few days.

If you want to turn off Gerbil's opening book, make a gerbil.ini file with this
in it:

  [settings]
  UseBook = 0

This shouldn't be necessary since i have a hard time believe that it would
superset the Chessbase book in any situation.
