It will probably be slower than a decent Pentium-3, Pentium-4, or Athlon system.
Their favourite comparison system from Sun is slow and outdated. Itanium looks
slow except for floating point, and most chess programs don't use floating
point.

To make matters worse, if you just run X86 programs on Itanium it is really,
really slow (like a good 486 or slow pentium). This is probably the only way to
run the commercial programs because i can't see the vendors recompiling to
support this dog. However you could get Crafty or other free source code and
recompile it yourself, provided you can find a working compiler.

Intel does intend followups to Itanium that should be faster. It is not clear at
this stage if they will be fast enough to be interesting.
