How are you setting that level? I just did level 40 100 30, and said "go". It said "target 3:35" and it took that long to make a move... if you are using winboard/xboard, I'd suggest looking at the very top of the log.nnn file to see what time control is getting set by xboard, to be sure you are setting it correctly and xboard is telling crafty... I'm not sure what you mean by "analyzes illegal moves"...
