I certainly appreciate the explanation. The rating system is only a gross approximation to reality, anyway. New computer accounts regularly disrupt it because they're under- rated to begin with. Noplay lists and formulas mess it up further. And then there's computer cheating - the regular cheat is likely to be caught, but it might take quite a while. And I suspect some use computer aid occasionally. There's no cure for it except not to take the ratings seriously. The rating system could be improved but it's still going to have flaws in comparison with official human ratings (which themselves are not flawless). Despite this, I see bad rating-motivated behavior all the time. IMO it's just not worth getting very exercised about rating points, but some people obviously differ with me about this (I'm not blaming any particular person in this controversy, however). I use ICC for testing. I'm more interested in looking at individual games than in the overall rating fluctuations. There's some correlation between rating and strength but it's far from perfect. --Jon
