I don't know about "rapid chess", but for players rated by the USCF, "quick
chess" is rated separately from ordinary chess and encompasses the time controls
of game in 10 minutes to game in 29 minutes. Less than 10 minutes is Blitz. 30
minutes or more is a "normal" event, though the faster of these had been rated
separately before and had been called "action chess".
