Either that, or get the assurance of the programmer that the tested
engine is the same. The only issue here is correct representation. If
ChessBase say that the engine is Fritz 5.01, or Schroder BV says that
the engine is Rebel 9.0, then whatever the package there is no reason to
doubt this statement.

Misrepresenting the engine is what you want to watch out for, but this
has not been done yet (and motives for this are not clear to me), so
there's no reason to suspect it. I will take the word of the
manufacturer, coupled with the monitoring of the SSDF to spot obvious
fraud.

Once again the only issue the public and the contestants should be
concerned about is correct representation. If you want the SSDF to test
Rebel 12 in its pre-alpha package, and then decide to never release it,
it's fine with me as long as you truthfully represent this piece of
software for what it really is. And if you say so, I have no reason to
doubt that it is true.

This whole issue was about trust. Accusations of breach of trust were
thrown in several directions rather recklessly. If the accusations are
not substantiated, what is the logic of forcing on us a conclusion that
from now on nobody trusts anybody else ?
