IE you have pawns at c5 and e5, I have pawns at c3, d3 and e3. I can play d4 safely. I want to be able to advance a pawn, and if you take with a pawn, I can retake and not lose material. If you don't take, I hope that I can take and open a file or diagonal that helps me. However, even an isolated pawn can make a lever move, if you have pawns at a6 and b5, and I have an isolated pawn at either a2 or c2. If I support it with pieces, I can advance it and open the file.
