I agree with you 2000 per cent.  Compoters are cheap today, but that is relative
to your pocket book.  Besides, as you said, you will never catch up.  As for
your comment about the Touch Chess game, that 1500 is OK for the casual player
but not the dedicated player, I disagree.  I think those small hand helds are
for blitz, when you're  on the bus, in the doctors office, or just killing time.
 At fast time a 1500 rated chess computer can keep you honest. I had an old
fidelity years ago that I could beat quite easily, so I would allow the machine
to get good positions against me and sometimes I would have to work very hard to
save myself.
