I remember to have heard many years ago, that USCF rating numbers are, or were, approximately 200 points higher than european ratings for the same strength (which btw. partially explained, why the elo numbers of some chess computers were so much higher than their strength seemed to be). Furthermore it was said IIRC, that the swedish elo rating level was a little bit different from the german (I don't remember anymore, if higher of lower), for the same strength. I'm not sure if somebody could prove that or has data which provides a reasonable comparison between those "pools". Probably, there are not enough games between US- and european players (?). SSDF tried to calibrate the list with games against swedish players; I think this was many years ago too... and recently, they have even reduced their rating level by 100 points. I wouldn't be much surprised, if the USCF rating of a particular chess progam at K6-2/450, or of one of the chess computers listed, would be 150...250 points higher than the SSDF rating - although I think the difference will be the smaller, the higher the SSDF rating is already (in other words, I don't expect Deep Fritz to be 2900 USCF... :o). Rating inflation is a big issue I think... I do not understand much of it. I have no idea if the SSDF ratings may be effected by this too (the rating correction which was done, seems to indicate that). Regards, M.Scheidl
