Exactly. And adopting a different kind of chess isn't something you do the week
before the tournament. Another note would be that there are more human than
computer opponents at the tournament, so it would be slightly ineffective to use
a couple of weeks on computer preparation instead of preparing for "normal
chess". Especially if it also requires investing money (and time) in computer
equipment and/or software. With an ELO below 2600 it's not that easy to make a
living on chess alone nowadays.

With all that in mind and probably a few things I haven't thought about, it's
less obvious why someone would care about losing to a computer in terms of prize
money. As for the pride issue. That tends to be most predominant with a higher
rating AFAIK.
