To >me this is a positive not a negative Very well put,Mark. I think that will also contribute to debunk the myth that to play chess at mastery levels requires a uncommon intelligence. The cognitive factors contributing to a great performance in chess for human players are IMO an uncommon "visual memory" to retain all the variation tree and likewise the analyzing skills by the mind's eye. This explains why all the greatest players are so skilled in "blindfold chess". In this process is involved also the "pattern recognition" that grows with expertise and helps to refers a present configuration to past situations , contributing to "cut" the search tree. Regards
