I would be willing to place a wager that my program, on a good quad alpha machine, and allowed to play in every FIDE event over the next year, would be capable of producing the requisite GM norms to earn the title. It would probably have a few horrible results. Several "so-so" results, and a few really good ones to produce the norms. And I still would not consider it a "GM" myself... Not until it has a reasonable understanding of more parts of the game. I don't fear the endgame against anybody any longer, but there are some holes that need work there. Kingside attacks are a different problem altogether. Crafty doesn't do badly in recognizing them, but it falls for them about as often as any other program, commercial or not. Which is way too often.
