This message is to express a point of view regarding what is best for evaluation of new chess engine software. It seems to me that the continuing process of development of better opening books is highly beneficial for all serious chessplayers. The efforts made by chess engine developers to develop better opening books for use by their own engines seems to be a significant contribution in this regard. For this reason, I feel that the developers of chess engines should be encouraged to continue to improve their opening books. What better incentive would there be than to require that the chess engines be tested with their own opening books? I therefore favor official computer-vs-computer testing, to establish rating lists, using opening books provided by the engine software providers.
