>you cannot differenciate if the engine is really stronger or the book weaker >this time, or maybe the learning routine is better. >this has nothing to do with the engine itself. >how do you want to make sure ? >you cannot. >its a grand illusion. >they make a list, and people believe whats written in this list. > Thorsten, I agree with you about quality doesn't equal quantity, and looking only at the first is securily better than looking only at the second. But I think also that quantity is important, also in life. I watch all the games that I do beetween programs, and I tend to do the more games than I can between them. For example I like very much the style of Junior 7 (one question about this: why you have not upgraded Junior 6a?) and sometimes it lose against other engines, but that's not important too much for me. It played much better and it lost pheraphs because it exposed a bit too much. But as in my life I like more to lose but play well, than to win and be dumb. So I just know that in reality it has won none the less. However an engine could play all in another way given a different position, and since there are many positions in chess you could not judge well how an engine plays overall if you don't do many games. You could take only a game and say: "look at this, beautiful!", but then you look at another game and it is the most boring game existing. This doesn't happen when an engine is really beautiful as Junior or Gambit Tiger. In any case they play a good chess, whatever position, and also if they lose or win, that it is not so important. But to know if the program is truly as you think or not you must prove it in many situations, and look at the way it plays in the more games you can. This is true also in life. Consider that you know a person for the first time and you have with he/she a very beautiful day. This doesn't mean that you will have with him/her an overall beautiful existence in day to day life. Many situasions arises only when you live togheter with another person, many reactions, many point of the character that you could not possibly know elsewhere. This explain why in fact many couples that go to live togheter then don't work well togheter as they thought before. One thing is to know a person really and one thing is to know him/her from his/her apparence. I hope I've explain well what I wanted to say. Sincerely, Fabio.
