If you consider all the direct mates and (forced checkmates up to 4 moves distant) for the first 5 plies of the game of chess, how many would you guess that there are? Remember, we are talking only 5 plies (2 and 1/2 full moves) with a 4 move forced mate look-ahead. The answer is 5552 checkmates (either for or against).
