Statistics makes all the difference. If you have 100+ games where white scored 65% with move A from a given position, but move B from that position only scored 35%, which one would you play? If there are 100+ games I believe statistics are generally indicative of the best line of play, but with smaller samples that becomes much less certain. Of course that's just a rough rule of thumb, and usually doesn't include the most recent theoretical advances in a particular opening line. If you are playing (or planning to play) at the 2400+ Elo level, then you need to know recent opening theory too. But you can be a good Master level player (up to about 2400) just based on statistics alone, IMHO. --WP
