Schlechter - Janowsky, Paris 1900
Played 100 years ago, this game reveals the fragrance of old, delicious
wine. The theme here is a cramped position and restricted pieces. Of course
the old masters knew how to play positionally very strong and this game
is one example.
The lamentable placing of the black bishop and rook, on the queenside,
enables white to launch a deadly onslaught on the opposite wing - where
he enjoys a free hand. The feard Carl Schlechter continued this way:
31.e6! dxe6 32.Qe5! (and now black is totally paralyzed) 32.-Qe7
33.g4 Rb4 34.Kg3 Rb6 35.h4 with a decisive attack.
Test: Can any program really match Schlechter in this one and choose 31.e6!
Big questionmark here - it's probably asking too much...
