Yes, you understood correctly. Preferably I would like a sound pawn structure in my games. But I will take any pawn structure in exchange for a superior game. I think you learned something important here. Now it's up to you to apply it. Chess is a game made up almost entirely by exeptions. Heck, being pawn or material down is just another positional consideration.
