Amy must also be considered, along with AnMon, The Crazy Bishop, Gromit 3, and
Phalanx. The new Bringer 1.8 seems very strong. SOS, Zchess and Comet are very
good too. ExChess 4.02 seems quite strong.
For a free database, SCID is definitely where it's at.
All that having been said, the professional products are a lot better, a lot
stronger, and have a lot more features. Plus it's about $120 for a top-notch
chess database:

But, if you just want free stuff, I say collect them all! Why would you want to
do that? Well (for instance) sometimes one program can solve a position that
none of the others can solve. Phalanx is especially adept at this.
Here are the results of last year's "Battle of the Crowns" -- you will notice
that the error bars are very large, and also keep in mind that many of these are
very old programs (some two years old or so). One example is that Zchess is
version 1.20 in this contest. At any rate

I am going to start soon a new contest to calibrate this year's chess programs.
Of course, by the time the contest is done, there will be all new programs once
again.
