I remember this experiment. It contained a very high number of blitz games, and quite many engines. The outcome with, and without ponder was slightly different (with a bandwidth of +/- differences depending on the engines), but overall you could come to the conclusion that it has virtually no significant influence on the success of a program fighting against others.
