Has anyone bothered trying to figure out *exactly* why some comps like Bxc3 and
others don't?  To me, that is the most interesting thing.

Seems to me that alot depends on how you statically evaluate the following type
of position:

[D]8/7p/6p1/K7/4k1P1/6P1/7P/8 b - -

White is a pawn up but is totally lost because of his king position.  Lambchop
evaluates this type of position as good for black, which is why it solves the
main position reasonably quickly (under 30sec on 1ghz).
