This is a position from one of the old main lines in the Nordic gambit.
It struck me that this one could serve as a good test position for
programs, sort of an extra "Nunn position". We have a rather equal
position without queens - meaning that the game probably will not be
decided through a king's attack. On the other hand, this position is
highly unbalanced, due to the pawn formation. In my big opening book
I find references to 52 games, with a win percentage for white of 52%.
Some of these are corr games. In Big 2001 there are 30 games with a
win percentage of 50% for white. Chess programs might prefer the black
side of it(?), since 3-1 pawns on the queenside might be easier to handle
than 4-2 on the kingside. This is just mere speculation from my part,
of course. The point should be to play it out with reverse colors also.
To me it looks like a typical position where the best player will win.
This position could also be fruitful for humans who want to train vs
programs. After a couple of games with white/black, I can assure you
that your understanding of the diagram position will deepen.
