But Bob's point is that he has designed *his* program to be run on its own
computer, with ponder=on. All his testing and tuning is done from this
perspective, to make Crafty run as good as possible in this configuration.

Now, some people are running the program in another configuration, considered
inferior and uninteresting by the author, and then they are surprised that he
doesn't like the test results. Go figure...


For example, Crafty will allocate 2-3 times the normal search time when its (so
far) best move suddenly fails low, smelling a trap. It is counting on being able
to recover this extra search time by using the opponent time in future moves. By
using ponder=off, you deny it this option, so now it could either fall into the
trap or lose on time...
