Well, for starters, a book on tactics would probably be more
appropriate, possibly even a manual on the game (which will teach far
more than just the movement of the pieces). A classic manual is
Tartakower's Breviary on Chess (I'm translating the title from French so
it could be different in English). If you think you are beyond this,
though having trouble with notation suggests you're not, then go for a
good primer on tactics such as Winning Chess Tactics by Seirawan (which
I hear is very good) or Neishtadt's Test Your Tactical Ability (which is
what I started with).
Getting back to the club's purpose AND answering your question: chess
strategy is easily one of the least explained and most complicated
aspects of the game, and even good books on the matter are rare so you
can imagine where that leaves chess software. Still, the field isn't
completely barren, while KK or others can no doubt fill the gaps
regarding more basic programs (therefore better suited for you), there
is Chess Assistant's Chess Strategy which is just out and also ChessBase
magazine. This last, usually has very enlightening articles on specific
aspects of positional play, among other things. I'm a die-hard Chess
Assistant user, but enough really can't be said about ChessBase
magazine.
