First up, a disclaimer: I think CCC is cool and this post is in no way a criticism of CCC or the people who run and/or use it. Anyways, I have a few ideas for improving CCC. But does CCC really need improving? Well if you are sure we have reached online perfection, then you'd better stop reading right now :-) Seriously, I think there are a number of reasons we should look at improving CCC: - new features have emerged in online discussion forums that enhance usability. Slashdot (http://www.slashdot.org/) being a good example. - over the years I think the volume of posts to CCC has increased, we need better facilities to deal with this. My own motivation is that the chess programming discussions that used to be relatively common now seem to be very rare. I suspect that part of this is because the facilities of the board are not conducive to such discussions. In particular with the way this board works, the high volume of posts tend to drown out interesting threads so that they are pushed to the bottom of the list and often overlooked completely. Often, a thread which basically consists of 2 or 3 people having a rapid fire conversation will fill up the screen. While I don't have anything against these discussions, I do find it tedious searching through them looking what what *I* am interested in. I'd like to see a system for classifying and sorting posts. I suggest a system that allows members to vote on a particular post. There would be a list of categories, and you would be able to vote to put a post in a particular category. Some possible categories could be: - interesting post about chess programming - interesting post about a match/tournament result - interesting post containing chess analysis - interesting post about moderation - interesting off topic post - interesting post, not covered by above topics - uninteresting post - post should be deleted by moderators etc The board would then display a category (based on the voting) for each post in its heading. Ideally there would be a way to sort threads by category too. OK, just a few ideas on a cold Saturday morning... cheers, Peter
