Yes, that was dumb.

You see an event coming, and you prepare for it.  If it's going to be an
open-hardware event, you develop a multiprocessor version, if you are serious
about being as competitive as you can be.

If you don't know it's an open hardware event, you could end up postponing an
SMP version and not have one.  You end up being not very competitive, you could
even end up buying the wrong hardware even if you do have an SMP version.

The annoying thing is that I doubt that anyone at the ICCA gave this a thought
and/or cares at all.

I doubt that many of the amateurs would have gone multiprocessor specifically
for this event if it had been announced in advance, and those who are already
SMP, still are.  The professionals have had plenty of time to see the writing on
the wall and develop an SMP version.

If you don't want to go, don't go.  But really, whose honor are you defending
here?
