Sort of a Soccer World Cup. Just an addition, you might want to give more
spots to regions where the programs are stronger. Lets say, 2 spots for
North America and Caribe, 1 spot for South America (you might even call one
continent here a give 2 for the Americas or just America as it is called in
other places), 3 spots for Europe, 1 for Asia, 1 for Oceania and 1 Africa.
Let's see potential players:
Crafty and Tiger for N.America and Caribe.
Amyan for S. America
Junior for Asia
Fritz, Shredder and Rebel for Europe,
Lamb Chop for Oceania.
I don't know anyone from Africa. I could join Oceania as one region if there
is no program or only one.
And also, you _MUST_ include one program from the host country.
So, organize everything in Argentina and Gaviota would join :-)
I am kidding about Gaviota, but I am not kidding about organizing it
in Argentina! Chess Tiger has been in the sport section of the most important
newspaper there (Clarin, who traditionally has put big bucks in chess
tournaments). People used to pack theaters to attend big matches in Buenos
Aires. When Kasparov played the Arg. Olymp Team in early 90's I had to watch the
games standing. Polugaevsky once was received with confetti (in a very typical
argentinian soccer way!) by his fans in his match against Korchnoi.
(not to mention the craziness that Fischer generated every time he was there).
I do not know what kind of reaction will have silicium players, but with the
right advertisement... Right now the economy is not ok, but these things change.
You can make the tournament with an odd number of programs and the one with the
bye plays a local GM. That game does not count for the championship but it will
attract more people!! You put the flags and you get in World Cup mood, great
for the newspapers, and a great entertainment.
