1) Don't make jokes (or realize that you are taking a risk if you do).
2) Don't toss in unrelated points, particularly controversial points.
3) Don't use a lot of obscenities, especially in titles.
4) Don't use examples, metaphors, etc., that are likely to offend.
5) Don't write a sentence that looks bad quoted out of context.
6) Don't assume that everyone who will read your stuff is of your same age,
race, gender, nationality, religion, and/or political viewpoint.  It is easy to
forget this and assume that everyone is just like you.

Note that I don't care whether anyone does any of the above (except for
obscenities in titles), I'm just pointing out how not to have your post erupt
into a giant flame-war, or devolve into a pointless discussion of something you
didn't intend to discuss, or provide ammunition for people who hate you to use
against you for years.

I have seen people mess up with all of the above, much to their regret at times.
