                                                       The differential
is actually greatest at the very top, and more or less consistent
otherwise. Some statistics: the average rating of the top five Americans
on the USCF list as of 1/1/98 (which excludes Gata Kamsky due to
inactivity) was 2705; the average rating of the top five Americans on
the FIDE list (again excluding Kamsky) was 2623, or a difference of 82.
Somewhat lower down the rating list, the fiftieth highest-rated American
on the USCF list was 2484, but the fiftieth highest-rated American on
the FIDE list was 2430, or a difference of 54 points. I don't have any
statistics for "average" Masters (2300-2400 USCF), but I suspect that
the average differential is about 40-50 points.
