I probably shouldn't be responding to this, as it has nothing to do with chess at all, but this is dead wrong. I'm not sure where you live, but in the US you don't 'buy' software, you license it. Due to this reason, you cannot "modify it, copy it, [or] do anything with it as long as you like". If software were treated by law as your actual property you would get to do all these things, but as it is, you are limited by what rights the license allows you. The legality of these license agreements was in question until the passing of the DMCA. Or stick with win2k. If linux was a more viable desktop solution (which it isn't for me in its current state, even though I do have it on a partition) it would be a good choice for a main OS. I'm not clear on on whether this is the case, but I HIGHLY doubt that ms would delete any non-OS related data if you get the code wrong. You make it sound as if you mistype the code your partition gets formatted. From what I'm told it locks you out of the OS if you do not enter the correct code within 2 weeks of installation.
