Um, well yeah. Imagine the scenario in which this happens. You install the OS.
It has an automatic registration you can use if you have an internet connection.
If you don't like that, you can call them and register. You have TWO FULL WEEKS
in which to do this. If for some reason you don't do it, you get locked out
until you can. So unless you don't have a phone, the only conceivable reason I
can come up with is that you pirated the OS from someone. Last I checked MS
doesn't have a huge amount of sympathy for pirates, and in this situation,
neither do I. Especially pirates who are so stupid as to not back up their data
in the two weeks before the OS locks you out.

I agree its a stupid idea. Its a major inconvenience, especially if you are a
hardware junkie. Hackers have already cracked the algorithm used to hash your
components and create the key. This will do nothing to stop the determined
pirate or W4r3z d00d. The only point this will serve is to harass the honest
home user or small businessman into buying multiple licenses of the OS, which is
crap. But if we've learned anything in our dealings with MS before, the only way
to fight them is with facts, not a bunch of lies in order to make our side seem
better. THIS IS EXACTLY THE TACTIC THEY USE AGAINST US. Reference their recent
criticisms of the GNU license for a good example. I could make a case for the
new windows being directly responsible for the deaths of thousands of innocent
puppies and kittens. While compelling, someone will point out that its a
ridiculous lie and no further criticism I have will be taken seriously.
