Lin, First of all, don't roam around Internet without "protection". Setup a simple software firewall and a virus scanner and you're for 95% out of the danger zone. If the money is lacking there are freeware apps around. For a virus scanner: http://www.thecomputermechanics.com/ For a simple software firewall: http://www.zonelabs.com Also you could try to find out if there's a trojan on your computer. Sometimes these ones screw up mosue operation, or CD-Rom operation. Trial versions of the Cleaner (http://www.moosoft.com) or BOClean (not only Back Orifice) at http://www.nsclean.com/index.html although I don'tknow if they still have a trail version. Second check through control panel>system>devices if every device on your system works okay, and if there are no conflicts. You could try and delete the CD-Rom from the device listing and let it be detected again by Windows. Windows (certainly not Me)doesn't need a driver for your CD Rom. Maybe a system file is damaged and doing the bad thing. Open start>run> and type in sfc (system file checker) now check if there are damaged system files. Put your Windows CD in the tray and let it detect faulty files and replace it. You could also try to find a freeware appfor checking windows problems, there are a lot around. And also remember the MS Knowledge base at http://search.support.microsoft.com/kb/c.asp and try to find out if your problem is known. You could also try the Microsoft news server msnews.microsoft.com and post a question in the appropriate newsgroup. Good luck. But if you don't have a virus scanner or a firewall, get one. Now, immediately. J.
