I sometimes wonder how much Deep Blue was improved upon by the
work of GM Joel Benjamin. Wasn't it the Fritz win win over Deep Thought
that exposed its own King Safety flaws (or was that due to a book error
that did not take into account King Safty). The commercial programmers
will just have to run out and employ one of these GM's for a year :-)

Or more likely the endgame bases were included so as not to make
Deep Blue look foolish.

One game comes to mind where Deep Blue's Rooks were reduced to shuffling
around in a cramped area. It was game three where Deep Blue played
Bc7 on its 40th move, giving up a pawn. The resulting position was
better for Deep Blue as its rooks were somewhat activated, putting
pressure on Gary's backward d pawn. Not sure if this is the position
Hsu was referring to.

Thanks for these informative posts on Deep Blue.
