Subject: Engine tablebase access - comparison position in Fritz GUI

This problem has me puzzled. (I'm easily puzzled.)

I was analyzing this position from the 8th round of the Montreal International
-IM Irina Krush was playing Black.

Celeron 333mhz, 48mb hash

ChessTiger 14 (Chessbase) GUI
Most important (but not all) 5 man tablebases

Engines used in analysis (all with tablebase support):
Chess Tiger 14
Crafty 18.10 (Chessbase version)
Little Goliath 1.5 (Chessbase version)
Fritz 6

[D]8/5p2/3k3p/7Q/P7/6PK/2pq4/8 w - - 0 1

When I used Little Goliath 1.5 to anaylze this position it started accessing the
tablebases instantly, and accessed them throughout its analysis.

Now, here's what puzzles me - when I analyzed the position with Chess Tiger,
Crafty 18.10, and Fritz 6, none of the engine access the tablebases during their
analysis.

All four of these engines usually access and use tablebases without a problem.
Is there something about this position and the engines which results in only
Little Goliath using tablebases when analyzing it?

That Crafty is not using the tablebases really has me puzzled. I thought Crafty
was capable of using tablebases even if the tablebase set was incomplete (unlike
some engines).

I don't get it. Any ideas?

JOHN
